James Tuchschmidt, MD
Dr. Tuchschmidt came to Providence Health & Services November 2015, with a wealth of national health care leadership experience. He most recently served as acting principal deputy undersecretary for health at the Office of Veterans Affairs in Washington, D.C. Previously he was executive director of the Office of Healthcare Transformation and Strategic Integration. Dr. Tuchschmidt also spent more than 11 years as chief executive officer of the VA Medical Center in Portland.
Dr. Tuchschmidt has held a wide range of clinical and academic leadership positions from the VA in Chicago to the Chicago Medical School, the USC Medical Center and Oregon Health Sciences University. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri Medical School and has a master’s in management from Northwestern University.
In his role at Providence, Dr. Tuchschmidt will lead the Oregon clinical programs, which include the Providence Heart & Vascular Institute, Providence Cancer Center, and the Providence Brain and Spine Institute. He is also accountable for other key programs and services, including Women & Children’s Services, Orthopedics, Medicine, Surgery and the hospitalists. Dr. Tuchschmidt will also engage with independent physician group partners to create ongoing sustainable relationships and alignment.
